CLICK HERE to access the online petition

For 100 years amateur radio has played a vital role in the technological development of the United States and continues to do so today. Thousands of scientists and engineers got started in electronics and communications careers as a result of an early interest in amateur radio. Many of today’s scientists and engineers, as well as others in less technical fields, continue to enjoy amateur radio. Amateur radio is an activity that has a demonstrated history of “paying off” for society.

Radio amateurs have a proud tradition of making their skills and equipment available for backup and auxiliary emergency communications in times of disaster – at no cost to taxpayers. The Amateur Radio Service provides a layer of redundancy – a most desirable feature of any communications system.

Unreasonable and unnecessary land use restrictions are now near universal in prohibiting the erection of antennas essential for amateur radio communications in most residential developments constructed in recent decades. Homeowner’s and property owner’s associations have usurped the legitimate authority of the Federal Communications Commission in this area of telecommunications. This has had a detrimental effect upon the development of the Amateur Radio Service and, as a consequence, it has had a negative effect upon our ability to provide emergency communications during times of disaster.

We request the Federal Communications Commission to take whatever steps are necessary to immediately void all existing private land use restrictions dealing with antennas used for the transmission or reception of radio signals and to disallow any future creation of such restrictions by private homeowner’s and property owner’s associations. We further request that the Federal Communications Commission consider the establishment of reasonable criteria for permitting the erection of antennas in private residential areas.

Over the course of the

Over the course of the last 4 years, prices of the parts and materials we buy to manufacture the SteppIR products have gone up exponentially. We have tried our very best to shield these increases from our customers, with just a single 4% increase implemented last year, with the majority of the items we purchase rising in price 20% or more during that time period.

Unfortunately, we continue to see significant increases come our way, and we are going to have to make an adjustment.

We want you, our valued customers, to know that this decision was not made lightly, we put a lot of thought and effort into finding ways to mitigate the price increase and to some degree those efforts have helped, but have not helped enough.

We will be implementing a 9% price increase on all products effective May 21, 2011. We are holding prices as they are now, through the Hamvention event May 18-20 out of respect for the many people that come to Dayton to place their orders with SteppIR.

The good news is that over the last several years we have put in significant time and funds to improve the SteppIR product considerably. The results have been extremely positive and we can very easily say that the Yagi’s, dipoles and vertical antennas we are now shipping to our customers are of the highest quality we have ever produced.

From time to time, we

From time to time, we get complaints from customers regarding galling of stainless steel fasteners.

Here is an excerpt from the Industrial Fastener Institute’s Standards Book:

Thread galling seems to be the most prevalent with fasteners made of stainless steel, aluminum, titanium and other alloys which self-generate an oxide surface film for corrosion protection. During fastener tightening, as pressure builds between the contactin and sliding thread surfaces, protective oxides are broken, possibly wiped off and iterface metal high points shear or lock together. This cumulative clogging-shearing-locking action causes increasing adhesion. In the extreme, galling leads to seizing – the actual freezing together of the threads. If tightening is continued, the fastener can be twisted off or its threads ripped out.

During minor galling, the fastener can still be removed, but in severe cases of galling, a strong bond between the bolt and nut can prevent removal of fastners. Unfortunately, little is known on how to control it, but here are two ways to minimize this effect:

Decreasing installation RPM speed will cause less friction and decrease heat generation.

Lubrication used prior to assembly can dramatically reduce or eliminate galling. Recommended lubricants should contain higher amounts of molybdenum disulfide, such as graphite which is very commonly used as a solid lubricant or special anti-galling lubricants sold by chemical companies.

We provide anti-seize compound with all of our antennas and strongly encourage you to use it to reduce the aggravation of galling. Contrary to popular belief, galling of stainless steel is not a symptom of a “cheap” fastener – it is prevelant in all types of stainless steel, aluminum and titanium fasteners. You can be assured that the stainless steel fasteners we provide with our products are manufactured of high quality.

Save yourself a lot of grief and always use a thread lubricant when working with stainless steel fasteners.

Thanks!
